Abstract

Between 2008 and 2012, a total of 11 patients (15 cases) received an intestinal segment interposition as ureteral substitution at our institution. Indications for an intestinal ureter were stricture following rectosigmoid cancer in four patients, uterine malignancy in four patients, ovarian cancer, urachal cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumor in each one patient. Ileal intestinal replacement was performed in nine cases and colonic replacement in six cases.<BR>Postoperative complications in short time follow up occurred in four patients, including pyelonephritis in three cases, hydronephrosis in two cases, adhesive ileus in two cases, and metabolic acidosis and intraperitoneal abscess in each one case.<BR>Follow-up periods ranged from 1 to 36 months following this procedure, with a mean of 16.3 months. During the follow-up periods, no patients experienced worsening renal function and recurrent urinary tract infections.<BR>During short and long term follow-up periods major complications hardly occurred and renal function remained preserved. Intestinal ureteral substitution is a safe and effective procedure in patients with lower ureteral resection needed for intrapelvic diseases.
