Abstract

A 79-year-old woman visited our hospital to investigate a left breast mass which was detected on computed tomography scans. Mammography and ultrasonography revealed a lobulated mass, 3.4×2.0×3.3 cm in size, in the left periareolar region. It was difficult to distinguish between malignancy and benignancy by core needle biopsy. However, blood flow pattern on breast magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated malignancy and suggested mucinous carcinoma. Partial resection of the left breast was performed for definitive diagnosis. Pathological findings showed proliferation of spindle myoepithelial cells around the epithelial cells containing heterogeneous structures. Mucin production and chondrogenesis was partly observed, thus we diagnosed pleomorphic adenoma of the breast. Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign mixed tumor found commonly in the salivary glands, but rarely in the breast. We reported a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the breast initially undistinguishable from mucinous carcinoma.
