Abstract

A 41-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal CT revealed air in the gallbladder and the patient was diagnosed as having emphysematous cholecystitis. On the day after the diagnosis, we performed emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The post operative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged 7 days after the surgery. In the Tokyo Guidelines published in 2013, emphysematous cholecystitis was classified as cholecystitis of moderate severity with severe focal complications, and that, therefore, emergency surgery is required. It is controversial whether laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be applied for emphysematous cholecystitis. We report a case of emphysematous cholecystitis treated successfully by laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
