Abstract

We present three cases of granulomatous lobular mastitis presenting different clinical courses.<BR>Case 1 : a 23-year-old woman was aware of a left breast mass in April 2009. She treated antibiotics with a suspicion of mastitis at another hospital, but it was ineffective. Then she was referred to our hospital. Core needle biopsy (CNB) provided a diagnosis of granulomatous lobular mastitis. No microorganisms were identified. Steroid therapy was eventually successful. Case 2 : a 36-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital because of redness, swelling and pain of the right breast in December 2011. Granulomatous lobular mastitis was suspected by cytological examination. The steroid therapy was ineffective, and incision and drainage were effective. Corynebacterium was isolated. Case 3 : a 36-year-old woman who had had right breast pain and fever since December 2011, and was given antibiotics with a diagnosis of mastitis at another hospital. As the antibiotics therapy failed to remit the symptoms, the patient was referred to our hospital in January 2012. We performed incision and drainage for the lesion. FNAC suggested that it was granulomatous lobular mastitis and Corynebacterium was isolated in a bacteriological study. We had great difficulties in treating her because of associated erythema nodosum.
