Abstract

We have experienced a case of esophageal cancer in which neuromuscular disease was first suspected after surgery for esophageal cancer from postoperative manifestations such as difficulty in expectorating, dysphagia and progressive muscle weakness, and eventually myotonic dystrophy (MyD) was diagnosed. This patient had a variety of clinical features including previous history of undergoing surgery for lung cancer, pectus excavatum, hyperammonemia induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), perioperatively occurred impairment of respiratory function and dysphagia. The patient passed away from pneumonia that might be caused by progressing muscular atrophy, as of 16 months after the operation.<BR>It is well known that MyD is associated with various benign and/or malignant tumors, but reports on MyD patients operated on for associated esophageal cancer have been few so far.
