Abstract

A 51-year-old man visited our hospital with left lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated inflammatory findings around the sigmoid colon, and diverticulitis was clinically suspected. Symptoms were not improved by active conservative treatments. Abdominal contrast-enhanced CT and ultrasonography (US) revealed an intramesenteric abscess related to diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon. In this case, partial sigmoid colectomy was selected as a curative treatment. The histopathology of the resected specimen showed an edematous change of the submocosa, infiltration of inflammatory cells into all the layers of the sigmoid colon, and intramesenteric abscess. Perforation and intraabdominal abscess are well-known complications in cases of colon diverticulitis, however, intramesenteric abscess is uncommon. We review the literature, including our case, in the discussion.
