Abstract

A 64-year-old woman was accidentally found to have a 10-cm cystic tumor in the liver by an abdominal CT scan. She was diagnosed with mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) of the liver and was scheduled to undergo curative surgery. During the waiting period for surgery, the tumor ruptured and caused abdominal pain, slight inflammation, and ascites. But her general condition remained stable, therefore she was treated conservatively. She underwent elective surgery, extended left hemihepatectomy, on the 14th day after the rupture.<BR>Intraoperative findings revealed no ascites or peritoneal dissemination. The histopathological diagnosis was mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the liver. She is doing well without any signs of recurrence one year after the surgery. Five cases of ruptured hepatic MCN have been reported, including the present case. These five patients had a tumor more than 10 cm in diameter, underwent curative resection, and have been free from recurrence of peritoneal dissemination. Careful follow-up will be necessary in the present case.
