Abstract

A 67-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of a growing abnormal shadow on plain chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed an intrathoracic smooth-shaped and fat-density mass measuring 13 × 6 cm arising from the left anterior chest wall. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed that the mass had iso-intensity to the subcutaneous fat, was not contrasted, and partially heterogeneous. A benign intrathoracic lipoma was likely on imaging procedures, but a possibility of liposarcoma could not be ruled out. The tumor was resected by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. The resected tumor was a pedunculated tumor arising from the parietal pleura, and was pathologically diagnosed as lipoma. Intrathoracic lipomas are rare. Many cases pose a problem regarding differentiation from liposarcoma clinically, and the definite diagnosis is often made by the resection of the tumor. We present a case of a growing intrathoracic chest wall type lipoma diagnosed by surgical resection, together with a review of the literature.
