Abstract

A 68-year-old man visited our hospital, complaining of abdominal fullness. He was admitted for treatment for ileus. After further examination, he was diagnosed as having ileus caused by an ileocecal tumor and underwent surgery. The tumor was later found to be a seminoma originating from the undescended testis in the abdominal space. The preoperative diagnosis by colonoscopy was therefore incorrect; the patient was treated for colon cancer. The patient was then referred to an urologist, and even though he did not have chemotherapy, no recurrence has been reported so far. General surgeons rarely treat testicular tumors today. Testicular tumors rarely originate from the undescended testis in the abdominal space, with 115 cases reported in Japan from 1986 to 2010. He was only the second reported patient in whom the tumor presented as ileus, making this a very rare case. From these observations, tumors of the undescended testis should be considered when an unknown tumor originating in the abdominal space is noted.
