Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasia with low-grade malignancy. We report three cases of GIST in the periproctic area. Case 1 was diagnosed as leiomyoma in 2000, but relapsed with GIST in 2002. The tumor de-differentiated from smooth muscle type to uncommitted type. Case 2 was diagnosed with leiomyoma in 1999, but the tumor was diagnosed as GIST by retrospective immunohistochemical study in 2003. Case 3 was diagnosed as GIST at the first operation in 2003. It was suggested that quite a few cases diagnosed as GIST in the past could have been diagnosed as GIST by immunohistochemical study. We must observe carefully cases of leiomyoma that has been resected in the past.
