Copolymerization of acrylamide with 2-methyl-N-vinyl imidazole in acetone was investigated. The monomer reactivity ratios of the copolymerization were determined and the Q and e values were calculated as follows: r₁=2.50, r₂=0.22; Q₂=0.49, e₂=-0.06 where r₁ and r₂ are the monomer reactivity ratios of acrylamide and 2-methyl-N-vinyl imidazole respectively. The resulting copolymers are soluble in water and also serve as a cationic polyelectrolyte in a dilute hydrochloric acid solution. In paper making tests, it was found that the copolymer gives the excellent size-retaining and strengthening effects on the forming paper. It is to be noted that the copolymer is effective in the paper making by using calcium carbonate as a filler
