Abstract

The collagenolytic activity had been found associated with both epithelial and mesenchymal tumors. But it had been difficult to ascertain whether the collagenolytic activity found in primary cultures of tumors originated from the tumor cells or from host cells in reaction to the tumor. As the first step to clarify this question this experiment was designed to prove the production of collagenase by cancer cell line and cultured fibroblast of the human skin, and further the collagenolytic activity of several kinds of human tumors including normal human tissues was measured by the culture methods of Gross and Lapiere.
The results are following:
1). Cancer cell lines (lung cancer, gastric cancer and colon cancer) had the high ability of collagenase production but cultured fibroblast of the human skin had very low.
2). Collagenolytic activity was much higher in malignant tumors than in normal tissues and benign tumors.
3). These collagenolytic activities were derived from mammlian collagenase by disc electrophoretic patterns of reactive products.
