Description

Due to the subdivisiated and technologized medical practice and the structural change of diseases in Japan, it is not difficult to imagine the growing demands of psychosomatic medicine and important roles it plays in the 21st century. Civilization has brought automatization and computerization and the changes in society as well as work place systems. This has led to an increasing number of patients suffering from diseases relating to life-style and new types of disease such as eating disorder, panic disorder and social phobia. Because these etiologies are considered to be multifactorial, it is difficult to determine the exact cause. Farthermore, they show therapeutic resistance and often become chronic. For these reasons, treatment should be educational teaching mind-body correlations to the patients. Especially, anorexia nervosa should be approached as a psychosomatic disease. I have introduced two cases, vasospastic angina, and ulcerative colitis which showed resistance to drug treatment. Both cases were treated by a combination of psychotherapeutic techniques such as autogenic training, desensitization, fasting therapy, group therapy and showed improvement. I also introduced a case with asthma and vasospastic angina resisting drug treatment and ended up in a fatal condition. It was obvious that the cause of this case becoming severe was due to lack of consideration for psychosocial factors. The 21st century will be a society composed largely of elderly people and the number of chronic functional diseases will increase. Therefore, the concept of mind-body correlation should become more common, not only for the benefit of diagnose and treatment but also for the maintenance and promotion of health.
