Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of medical education is concerned with knowledge, techneques and attitudes. The education of doctor's attitudes covers a wide range from manners and etiquette, communication, ethics, to therapeutic self. In the background for this lies the concept that doctors should have psychosomatic and comprehensive understanding of patients, namely they should have knowledge and techniques for practicing medical humanity. Subjects and methods: Based on "The study on family doctors" conducted by the Japan Medical Association (1994), the author sent out a questionnaire to citizens inquiring about doctors' knowledge, techniques and attitude (2002), and analyzed the findings obtained. Results: The findings were almost similar in both studies. With special reference to the reason for choosing the family doctor, "Near my house" was the most frequent answer. On the other hand, the most frequent answer for dissatisfaction with the family doctor was "Doctor's attitude", namely "Communication". Discussion: The need for comprehensive medicine has been recognized increasingly. However, in the actual field of medical education psychosomatic medicine doesn't seem to have become as prevalent as it should be. The author believes that establishment of the doctor-patient relationship based on bio-psycho-socio-existential understanding of the patients, also on Balint's method and the medical treatment which applies salutogenesis should be emphasized more in terms of medical humanity. Today, in advanced nations including Japan, complementary alternative medical treatment or integrated medicine combining both Occidental and Oriental medicine has been developing. In the background of these trends also psychosomatic medicine is essential and the goal to achieve is comprehensive medicine.
