Abstract
Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa was originally studied and treated by the doctors in the field of psychosomatics and internal medicine in Japan. Since the middle of 1990s, the eating disorders have been received attention as psychiatric disorders along with the increment of the number of patients with binge eating and purging behaviors. This is because they showed high comorbidity of psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders, and exhibited problematic behaviors such as shoplifting, self-mutilation, and suicide attempt. Here I described as topics of psychiatry, newly revised diagnostic criteria of anorexia nervosa in DSM-5, the increment of eating disorders in working women, the features of the patients with eating disorders and pervasive developmental disorders, and the eating disorder's patients with shoplifting.
