Abstract

2-Pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC), a chemically stable metabolic intermediate of lignin, was converted into the corresponding acid chloride and thermoplastic polyesters were synthesized by polycondensation with several aromatic diols. The polyesters exhibited high decomposition temperature due to the presence of aromatic group adjacent to the PDC group. The films prepared by hot-pressing gave relatively high fracture stress that is almost comparable to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and showed oriented crystallization upon stretching.
