Abstract

It has been recognized as a significant matter to maintain and improve the quality of life (QOL) among the middle or advanced aged. Conditions of their physical and psychological state and circumstances surrounding them are mutually influenced, and the relationships among them are complicated and unclear. It is needed to investigate their relationships in consideration of the other fields such as sociology. The purpose of this study is to clear, from the point of oral hygiene, how they relate one another and what influences are produced. One hundred seventy five subjects (61 males and 114 females, of their age ranging from 40 to 92, living in Hinohara village, the rural area of Tokyo) were physically examined at their annual health checks including dental checks, and directly interviewed using a questionnaire on their life style, their dental health, physical state and social activities. The following findings emerged by statistical analyses: Better condition of oral cavity (the number of present teeth, the code of community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN), ability of chewing with one's own teeth or the artificial teeth, and the satisfaction of total oral function) were comprehensively related to healthier ways of living and more frequent participation to social activities. It is suggested that an annual dental check should give an advantage to promote the QOL of the middle or advanced aged as well as the annual physical health check by the law (ROJIN HOKEN HO). It is important that the purpose of "the campaign 8020" should be established through continuous efforts. And it is also important that, even if the aged have few or almost no teeth of their own, the amenity of dental and oral circumstances should be maintained well as much as possible, from the point of their mental and physical health.
