Description

This study investigated the development of symbolic play in Japanese infants using the Symbolic Play Test (SPT) . The SPT was administered to 129 normal infants between 8 and 48 months of age. The subjects were divided into six groups by age. The mean stores were 5.8 at 12-17 months, 10.4 at 18-23 months, 16.0 at 24-29 months, 18.7 at 30-35 month, and 19.6 at 36-48 months. From the aspect of “decentration” in play development, contents of play assessed by each item were classified into the categories of “selfdirected, ”“passive-other directed, ” and “active-other directed.” The pass rates on the most typical items in those categories were as follows. The “self-directed” (item 3) was passed in 80% at 12-17 months. The “passive-other directed” (item 4) was passed in 60% at 18-23, and 88% at 24-29 months. The “active-other directed” (item 17) was passed in 65% at 24-29, and 86% at 30-35 months. These data can serve as a norm for assessment of symbolic play in infants.
