Description
A new score for measuring the degree of diabetic retinopathy was designed in addition to Scott's classification. The criteria for calculating the worsening of diabetic retinopathy are as follows: Scott 0 was calculated as 0; Scott I a as 1; Scott II as 2; Scott 1ff a as 3; Scott 1ff b and Scott I b as 4; Scott IV, Scott V a, and Scott Vb as 5; Scott VI as 6. Measurements for the degree of diabetic retinopathy at initial optic fundi examination and for the following progression of diabetic retinopathy during a five year period were made.
The following are the results of the investigation:
(1) The score of diabetic retinopathy increased with the severity and the prolongation of diabetes; however, it's increase was inhibited by proper treatment of diabetes.
(2) Among the groups of diabetic retinopathy with less than Scott 1ff a at the first examination, the score of diabetic retinopathy during five years of treatment increased with the severity of diabetic control, and the difference in the score of diabetic retinopathy between good and poor control groups was statistically significant at initial examination, except in the case of Scott 1ff a.
(3) Increase in the score of diabetic retinopathy during the five year period was lower in the proteinuria-negative group than in the group with a recent onset of proteinuria and in the proteinuria-positive group, irrespective of diabetic control. The difference between those with and without proteinuria was significant in good and poor control groups.
(4) The progression of diabetic retinopathy during the five year period was not correlated to hypertension.
