Description
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the factors affecting the honeymoon period in adult-onset Japanese type 1 diabetes (T1D). A total of 30 patients (13 men, 17 women) were investigated, with a mean age of 44.6 years (range: 18-76 years), and new-onset physician-diagnosed T1D. The honeymoon period was defined as the period with an insulin requirement of under 0.5 U/kg/day. Patients were divided into two groups: the honeymoon group, i.e., patients with T1D appearing to be in the honeymoon period, and the non-honeymoon group, i.e., patients with T1D in whom the honeymoon period seemed to have passed. There were 19 patients (63.3%) in the honeymoon group, who showed higher urinary C-peptide levels, higher serum LDL-cholesterol levels, and lower insulin dose requirements at the time of hospital discharge than the patients of the non-honeymoon group (p=0.0022, p=0.01, and p=0.0004, respectively). The length of time from the diagnosis until the start of the honeymoon period was 1.9±2.0 months, and the honeymoon period lasted for 16.0±4.9 months. The insulin secretory capacity, lipid profile, and insulin dose requirement were identified as factors potentially affecting the occurrence of the honeymoon period.<br>
