Abstract

We investigated and evaluated administration of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) in Tokyo Women's Medical College Hospital (TWMCH) from the viewpoint of the guidelines for appropriate use of blood products. In TWMCH, 2657 units of FFP were used from October to December in 1987 which were reduced by 38% of those used in the same period in 1985, due to shortening the days administered per case with hepatic and alimentary tract disease. But 10% of the FFP units was excessively given to patients with the appropriate indications after the hemorrhagic tendency disappeared. These findings demonstrate that only 24% of the FFP units used as usual was appropriately indicated. Presuming that this data could be applied to the total amount of demand for FFP in our country, we can obtain 340, 000 liters of source plasma from the total blood products supplied by JRC Blood Centers in 1987.<br>To promote appropriate use of blood will result in saving a lot of plasma and a great impact to achieve the self-sufficiency of source plasma in our country.
