Abstract

We report a case of endocrine cell carcinoma of the rectum responding to preoperative chemoradiation therapy. A 61-year-old man with unresectable advanced lower rectal carcinoma underwent a colostomy and was treated by chemotherapy with CPT-11, 5-FU, and l-LV combined with irradiation to the pelvis. The tumor subsequently shrank and radical abdominoperineal resection was done. The definitive diagnosis was endocrine cell carcinoma. We confirmed the absence of recurrence 46 months after radical surgery. Colorectal endocrine cell carcinoma is dismal and cannot treated by surgery alone. Intensive treatment including preoperative chemotherapy and radiation may be effective in fighting this disease.
