Abstract

There are many different opinions concerning the axis of the ankle joint. We therefore investigated this axis in 10 lower legs of healthy males (mean age, 24.4 years) and one cadaver leg (60 years old). We measured the axis of dorsi- plantar flexion in the ankle joint through multi-exposure photographs.<br>At present, general opinion is that the axis line of dorsi- plantar flexion in the ankle joint is a straight line connected between the lowest point of the medial malleolus and the middle point of the lateral malleolus. This line is supposed to be parallel to the ground. As the result of our investigation, axis points were located 8mm lower and 8mm behind the tip of the medial malleous and 10mm anterior to the tip of the lateral malleolus.
