There are few reports about the distribution of motoneurons innervating the forelimb muscles in the rat.
30 Wistar rats (60 forelimbs) were used for this study.
We injected horseradish peroxidase (HRP) solution into their muscles which were one of deltoid or biceps, triceps, E. C. R., F. C. U., and flexor digitorums.
24-48 hours later, the rats were retuened by saline water, and fixed by 0.05mol PBS contained glutaraldehyde.
Spinal cords segments C2 to Th2 were removed, and re-fixed during 24 hours.
Cords were freezed, and sliced 100 micrometers thickness on the frontal plane, and reacted by diaminobentizine (DAB).
HRP labeled cells were counted in each slices under a microscope of 40-100 magnification.
Motoneurons innervating deltoid muscle located mainly in segments C5, biceps brachii in C5-6, triceps brachii in C7-8, extensor carpiradialis in C7 to Th1, flexor digitorum superficial and profunds in C8, Th1, flexor carpi ulnaris in C8, Th1.
Zancolli supposed and, Kendall compilated the segmental innervation of the upper extremity muscles in man.
The distribution innervating the forelimb muscles in the rat was similar to their reports except extensor carpi radialis.
