Description

Many authors report that discal cysts are likely to occur at the upper lumbar level, such as L2/3 or L3/4, compared with typical disc herniation.<BR>We present a case of discal cyst raised from L5-S1 disc. A 27-year-old male was admitted to our hospital suffering from low back pain and right sciatica. An intra-spinal cyst was detected at L5-S1 with MR imaging. Right S1 root was compressed with a mass, which connected to L5/S1 disc. In MR imaging, it showed low intensity in T1 weighted image, and high-iso intensity in T2 weighted image. L5/S1 discogram revealed that the intradiscal space communicated to the cystic mass. The cyst was excised surgically under microscopic vision. Histological findings showed that the cystic wall was composed of fibrous connective tissues including hemosiderin deposits and synovial tissue.
