Forty cases of human infestations with hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) were reported in Toyama Prefecture, Honshu, Japan from 1974 to 2009. Causative tick species were Haemaphysalis flava (1 case), H. japonica (2 cases), H. longicornis (3 cases), Haemaphysalis sp. (2 cases), Ixodes acutitarsus (4 cases), I. monospinosus (3 cases), I. nipponensis (6 cases), I. ovatus (11 cases), I. persulcatus (6 cases) and Ixodidae gen. sp. (2 cases). Although serological examination was carried out for antibodies against the borrelial antigen Borrelia burgdorferi in the following 10 cases, the antibody was not detected in 3 of the I. ovatus cases, 1 of I. nipponensis, 3 of I. persulcatus, 2 of I. monospinosus and 1 of Ixodidae gen. sp. A cement-like substance and mucinosis were observed in four cases: 2 of I. ovatus, 1 of I. nipponensis and 1 of Ixodidae gen. sp. by histopathological examination of the infestation sites. This paper reviews the infestations with ticks occurring in Toyama Prefecture between 1973 and 2009. The reported cases occurred during the period from March to December except for November, with the highest incidences in May and June. The ages of the patients ranged from 2 to 88 years. The most common infestation site was the neck of the patients. The majority of the tick infestations were principally acquired in mountainous areas.
