Abstract
This review serves to summarize important articles concerned with acari-borne rickettsioses and spirochetoses inside and outside of Japan, especially from the acarology researcher's side, and to introduce recent findings, or to deal with as many questions as possible including our preliminary results. The subjects herein presented are as follows; vectorial competences of trombiculid mites for tsutsugamushi disease associated with regional endemic factors throughout Japan, vectorial competences of ticks for spotted fever occurring in the southwestern half of Japan and any possible vectors of other rickettsioses known recently; vectorial competence of ticks for Lyme disease found mostly in the northeastern half of Japan and various questions on the transmission dynamics of Borrelia.
