Abstract

We have developed ball-bearings for the implantable artificial heart. These ball-bearings can work in a humidity of 100% without any lubricant during 2 years. We have developed two sizes of bearings, one is φ37mm×φ30mm×4mm (outer diameter×inner diameter×thickness) and another is φ32mm×25mm×φ4mm. Each ball-bearing consists of a stainless steel inner ring, a stainless steel outer ring, a stainless steel cage, and stainless steel balls. The raceways on both ring and the cage in each ball-bearing are coated with PTFE for solid lubricant. Endurance of one of the ball-bearings(φ37mm×φ30mm×4mm) has been tested in a saturate water vapor environment for about 200 days under an axial load of 6.5kgf at a motor velocity of 1040rpm with a motor rotational direction change of 100times/min., whose conditions correspond with those in human body under a mean afterload of 100mmHg with a drive rate of 100bpm. Vibration signal and sound signal from the ball-bearing have been continuously detected to monitor the ball-bearing, but we have not detected any signal of its damage. From the above results, ball-bearings we have developed have excellent mechanical durabilities for the implantable artificial heart.
