Description

Effects of projection angle to the condyle on the fossa-condylar relationship were examined in lateral oblique transcranial projection (LOTP) and lateral tomography. Eight temporomandibular joints (TMJ) obtained from human dry skull were used. Axial image of each skull was served to determine the angle to long axis of condylar head. Each TMJ was radiographied in LOTP and lateral tomography using the horizontal projection angles varied±10 degree by two degree based on the angle to long axis of condyle. Radiographs obtained were used to measure the width and area of joint space.<br>The results showed that only width of condylar fossa and posterior joint space depended on the projection angle in LOTP but not in lateral tomography. These indicate that lateral tomography is more reliable to determine the fossa-condylar relationship in the routine radiographic examination.
