Abstract

In Japan the existence of pollinosis has been often presumed from various points of view, but little reports on pollinosis whose allergen is known are found so far. The authors happened to meet 21 cases with allergic symytoms in nasal cavity, pharynx and conjunctiva, which often appear in a special season, especially in spring in the district of Nikko and its neighbourhood, and thus various clinical examinations have been carried out on these 21 cases. The period of these allergic attacks coincided with efflorescence of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria Japonica). And the authors investigated into allergens in these cases. Prick tests with the Japanese cedar pollen were carried out and positive results were obtained in 71.4% of these cases. Positive intradermal reactions to the extract of Japanese cedar pollen (Torii & Co Ltd.) were observed in 85.7% of these cases. Positive conjunctival and nasal reactions to the Japanese cedar pollen were observed in 85.7% and 100% of these cases respectably. In 2 cases Prausnitz-Kustner tests were carried out and they showed positive results. From the results obtained, the authors confirm that these cases are pollinosis sensitized with Japanese cedar pollen. Therefore the authors gave the name "Japanese cedar pollinosis" to this allergic disease.
