Description
Epidemiological survey subjected to the respiratory disorders was carried out among the workers in the lumber industry using western red ceder logs and lumbers. The assumed incidence of asthmatic patients is 5 percents in 1320 workers exposed to the sawdust, even they are protected by the dust-absorbing equipment. The course of symptoms developing by the exposure to the sawdust is as follows: an irritating sensation upon the mucous membrane of nose and eyes within 30 minutes, slight breathlessness in the afternoon and asthmatic attack in the late afternoon or the evening. The worse season for the asthmatic patients is winter which is related with chronic bronchitis conexisted. The main symptoms directly related to handling with western red ceder are rhinitis, asthmatic attack, conjunctivitis and dermatitis, among which conjunctivitis occurres frequently among the workers in charge of lumbering and rhinitis as well as asthma have more correlation with processing for wooden furnitures. The allergic constitution (personaly or hereditary) has a big role for developing the allergic symptoms above mentioned. In addition, chronic bronchitis is a major complication for the asthmatic patients in this survey.
