Abstract

In order to clinically investigate focal infection, accuate diagnosis of infectious foci is very important. Hitherto humoral antibodies against streptococcal products, such as serum ASO, have been widely used as diagnostic indicators for streptococosis, which is thought to be a main cause of focal infection. A new method to estimate the ASO activities in human blood leucocytes (C-ASO) was applied to patients with connective tissue disorders, bronchial asthma and diabetes mellitus and also to healthy controls. Results were as follows: 1) The normal range of C-ASO titers in healthy children or adults was estimatied to be below 4-fold. 2) C-ASO titers in the patients mentioned above and in controls were arranged in order of high titers as follows; SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus and healthy controls. The differences of the means of C-ASO between patients with these diseases and healthy controls were statistically significant. 3) C-ASO titers were higher in rheumatoid arthritis on exacerbation of joint manifestation, in active rheumatic fever and in both before focal removals than on remission, in inactive stage and after focal removals, respectively. 4) Changes of C-ASO titers on focal removals and upon provocation tests by irradiation of ultrashort wave might be useful in diagnosting infectious foci.
