Abstract

Among 1565 astmatic children, 96 cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections were confirmed serologically. Both the indirect hemagglutination test and the complement fixation test were applied for diagnosis of the Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections. Forty seven cases had pneumonia, 32 cases had no pneumonia and in 17 cases chest X-ray examinations were not done. Clinical pictures associated with Mycoplasma pneumonia infection of asthmatic children were related to the age of the chidren in whom it occured. Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia cases of young children (under 3 years old) were accompanied with moderate or severe exacerbation of asthma attack and with signs of infection upon laboratory examination. In older children, Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia was not always accompanied with asthma attack but caused only cough and fever and other infectious signs upon laboratory examination. However, in the cases wihout pneumonia, Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection could be found with asthma attack but without fever of other signs of infection. In general, the clinical pictures of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections in asthmatic children showed tendencies toward prolonged courses, especially in cases with pneumonia but also in cases without pneumonia.
