To clarify the effect of chewing gum (containing chlorophyl) on reducing bad breath, a comparative test was conducted with other kinds of commercially available bad breath removers of granular type and of spray type.
Bad breath varies depending upon its cause and generation mechanism. However, in this test bad breath was forcibly generated by eating “Gyoza”, a kind of Chinese food made from pork mixed with garlic. Exhalation of each subject who ate “Gyoza” was caught in a plastic bag, and diluted stepwise with odorless air. The subjects were eight adults, aged from 22 to 28 years old (4 males, 4 females). Against each sample thus prepared, presence, quality, intensity, and grade of uupleasantness were evaluated.
Chewing gum and two kinds of bad breath removers used in this test all showed a masking effect to a considerable extent. At the same time it was found that the effect of suppressing the remaining food odor is closely related to the strength of the original odor of each of the products tested. On the other hand, suppression effect of the remaining food odor was found not necessarily correlated to suppression of uncomfortableness of bad breath, because co-presence of the remaining food odor and the odor of bad breath removers would bring forth a sort of mixed odor. By chewing gum, it was found possible to improve the oral odor and a noticeable effect was observed on reducing unpleasantness.
Although this test proved that chewing gum had an effect in suppressing bad breath, the effect was transitory (lasting for about 5 minutes on average) and the remaining food odor came back when the fragrance of the chewing gum disappeared.
