Description

Airway obstruction is one of the terminal images of a thyroid tumor, and although it is only a palliative medical treatment, airway management by tracheal stent placement has a significant role. In a thyroid tumor patient, if the respiratory tract is secured, comparatively long-term survival can be expected, except in case of undifferentiated cancer; this differs greatly from cases of stent placement applied to lung cancer or esophagus cancer. To enable long-term placement, it is necessary to consider the modality of the stent and the positional choice by CT or endoscope beforehand.<br>Here, we report three cases in which a tracheal stent was applied for tracheal stenosis caused by thyroid tumor. The findings suggested that in thyroid tumor cases accompanied by tracheal stenosis with difficulty of complete cure treatment, application of a stent is useful as an auxiliary medical treatment, and serves to improve QOL.
