Abstract

Long-term success was achieved after autologous implantation of fascia into the vocal fold for treatment of unilateral laryngeal nerve paralysis, despite autologous fascia resorption. We speculated that the transplantation of donated cells and scaffold would activate growth factors in the implanted space. We implanted fascia with and without basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) into the paralyzed side of the larynx of Sprague-Dawley rats to assess whether the autologous fascia would increase the volume of the remaining implanted fascia and alter the structure of the laryngeal tissue. We found that the volume of the implanted fascia and volume of the fat tissue were significantly higher in rats that received implants with b-FGF than in the rats that received implants without b-FGF 12 weeks after surgery (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the increased fat tissue volume occurs adipogenously, and this remaining implanted fascia leads to tissue remodeling in the paralyzed laryngeal tissue. Therefore, we concluded that autologous fascia implantation with b-FGF may be beneficial in the treatment of unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
