Abstract

Orbital complications caused by acute sinusitis represent emergency conditions that need precise evaluation and prompt management. Herein, we report 5 surgically treated patients with orbital complications caused by acute sinusitis. Three presented with orbital subperiosteal abscess, one with incomplete cavernous sinus syndrome, and one with optic neuritis. In all cases, emergent endoscopic sinus surgery was performed for orbital decompression. After the surgery, 4 of the patients showed full recovery from the visual disturbances, while the remaining one patient, in whom the preoperative visual acuity deterioration was severe, did not. We would like to emphasize that prompt diagnosis of orbital complications and immediate surgical drainage for orbital decompression are essential to avoid severe loss of visual acuity.
