Abstract

Pyriform sinus fistula and cyst is a relatively rare disease of the neck, even more so in the neonatal period. We report on a rare cervical cyst in a neonate. She was born at 40 weeks gestation with a cystic mass on the left side of her neck. CT scan and MRI revealed a cervical mass with air-fluid level. She developed signs of upper airway obstruction preoperatively after oral feeding, requiring puncture and suction of the cyst. The cyst was removed through a left cervical incision on the 26th day of life.<br>We suggest that a lateral neck mass in a neonate should undergo thorough clinical and radiological assessments to rule out the possibility of a congenital pyriform sinus fistula. In cases of pyriform sinus fistula, life-threatening upper airway obstruction may occur after oral feeding, and careful observation is needed after birth.
