Description

Osmotic fragility was measured with CPC on the erythrocytes obtained from the patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and also on the antibody-coated normal erythrocytes. A part of the erythrocytes examined always demonstrated significantly decreased osmotic fragility. As to the antibody-coated erythrocytes, a distinct decrease in their osmotic fragility was recognized with the antisera diluted up to 10-folds; however, a normal fragility was demonstrated with higher dilution of the antiserum. When studied on the erythrocytes coated with antibody fragments, IgM and IgMs showed a decreased fragility, and Fab and Fc fragments of the IgM antibody did not affect to the fragility at all.<br>It was once suspected that the cause of decreased osmotic fragility of the antibody-coated erythrocytes was due to larger particle radius of erythrocyte aggregates produced by antigen-antibody reaction. However, the special character of Coil Planet Centrifuge would not make one to support fully the above possibility. For other possibilities, it is necessary to look up morphologically, and their results will be reported in the second report.
