• Effect of Soil Moisture on Vine Growth and Fruit Production of Kyoho Grapes Growing on Restricted Rooting Volume.

説明

Tetraploid grapes such as Kyoho (Vitis vinifera×V. labruscana) produced good shaped, well colored fruit bunches when they are planted in an isolated bed or a container. In this planting system of restricted rooting volume, grapevines must be watered frequently as many roots are growing in a small volume of soil. In order to establish a suitable watering program for these vines, we tested the effect of two levels of soil moisture on vine growth, berry set and fruit maturity of Kyoho. The levels tested were maintained by watering at pF 1.5 or pF 2.2 automatically.
1. Vines watered at pF 2.2, from bud burst to leaf fall, showed slower shoot growth and weaker lateral growth than those watered at pF 1.5. Leaf area per shoot measured at veraison was also smaller on the vines watered at pF 2.2. Root growth, on the contrary, was much more active on these vines during the period from prebloom to seed hardening. Suberization of new roots observed after that, also proceeded more rapidly in the vines watered at pF 2.2 than those watered at pF 1.5.
2. Vines watered at both pF 1.5 and pF 2.2 set about 20 seeded berries, and only a few seedless ones per cluster. No distinct difference was observed in the rates of both set berries to total florets and seeded berries to total berries set between two watering plots.
3. Increase in berry size was more rapid on the vines watered at pF 1.5 than those watered at pF 2.2 until seed hardening, though the trend was reversed after that. Intensity of skin color and sugar content of juice at harvest were higher at the vines watered at pF 2.2.
4. Berry growth was accelerated by watering the vines at pF 1.5 after berry set which had been watered at pF 2.2 until that time. Coloration was promoted by watering these vines at pF 2.2 against after veraison.
