River waters (R. Tamagawa) were collected at Chofu dam at two-week intervals from June 1984 to August 1985 and determined for their dissolved and suspended LAS concentrations by HPLC. Total LAS concentrations for samples collected at low-flow rates range from 17 to 484μg·l-1 with an yearly mean value of 222 ±131μg·l-1. A marked seasonal trend was noted in LAS concentrations with maximum in winter months and minimum in summer months. Homologues with longer alkyl chain (C12, C13, C14) and isomers with external phenyl position depleted in summer months. These seasonal variations of LAS indicate that LAS are more biodegraded in summer months than in winter months. Flux of dissolved LAS as well as suspended ones were generally higher at high-flow rate than at low-flow rate. These higher flux are explained by not only resuspension of bottom sediments containing LAS but also probably elution of LAS from sediments and soils etc..<BR>Suspended LAS comprised 0.827.7% of the total LAS in the river water and their concentrations on dry weight base were higher at one order of magnitude than those in river sediments. Suspended LAS were dominated by C12 and C13 homologues. These results indicate that suspended river particles are a carrier of LAS to bottom sediments.
