Abstract

A review of recent studies on conventional organic parameters and trace organics in water has been made. (1)The conjunctive use of the different organic parameters can be an effective method of characterizing waste water in terms of organic strength and of predicting its treatability. (2)The GC-MS computer technique is a useful method for analysis of trace organics in water. But new methods and instruments will be needed to analyze the nonvolatile remainder for which gas chromatography is inappropriate. (3)Intensive water quality surveillance programs and research on the health effects of long-term ingestion of trace organics are needed.
