Description

"The Kojiki"- the oldest records of the history, mythologies, traditions, etc. of Japan ― consists of three volumes. The first volume covers mainly the dawn of history and contains many collections of mythological events that were compiled by order of the Imperial Court to justify the divine origin of the Emperor and to establish the royal authority of the Yamato clan. There is therefore a difference of opinion regarding the Kojiki as pure mythology. However, in spite of the Intentions of the Imperial Court, the Kojiki relates the mythology of ancient Japan in regards to the people's belief in the gods quite faithfully. This study focuses on the general religious thinking of that period, especially regarding "uncleanness" in relation to thoughts on life and death.
