Description

The monitoring of the environmental conditions and physiological characteristics of planted trees were carried out in a passenger terminal building of Kansai International Airport. The diurnal and seasonal variations of air and soil temperature in the atrium indicated no significant change. The air temperature was about 26°C in summer and about 20°C in winter. Whereas the maximum photosynthetic photon fiux density (PPFD) in the atrium was only about 8% in summer, about 3% in winter of full sun. And PPFDs had great variations diurnally and seasonally. Photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of evergreen trees originated in Japan followed the variations of PPFDs. With time course of 1 year from transplanting into the atrium, the capacity of stomatal conductance remained unchanged, but photosynthetic rate increased, dark respiration decreased and light compensation point decreased to about 10 μmol/m2/s in almost trees. These trees acclimated photosynthetically in the atrium and increased shade tolerance.
