Tree herbaceous flowering plant species, Lythrum anceps, Physostegia virginiana and Platycodon grandiflorus, were studied on their seed germination properties when sown under different condition of temperature and light. In the germination tests under light condition, the seed lots of Lythrum anceps gave generally low percentage especially just after seed harvest, in lower range of temperature of 10 and 15°C. Higher and highest percentages were presented by the seed lots tested in range from 20 to 30°C, though the rates decreasing somewhat at older seed ages. Under dark condition, on the other hand, the rates were very low in almost all tests, suggesting the germinative habit of this species was almost restricted by the light condition. Prechilling, GA3 application combined with prechilling, and especially temperature shifting from 20 to 30°C exhibited effect of hastening the germination and heightening its percentages. Even in the case sown within tap or boiled water the seed lots of Lythrum anceps could exhibit germination as high as about 90%. Physostegia virginiana exhibited low and unstable germination in every test. Both treatment of temperature shifting and GA3 application could exhibit some effect of improving germination of this species. In every test at temperatures of 15°C and higher, Platycodon grandiflorus exhibited much higher and stable germination rates under light condition than under dark condition just after harvest. Both treatments of temperature shifting and GA3, application could improve germination rate to some extent in this species.
