Description
Heat-resistant materials are expected for practical applications in wide industrial areas, and functionally gradient materials (FGMs) consisting of ceramic and metal powder materials have been used to obtain the thermal stress relaxation property. However, a serious problem for such powder-based materials is still left unsolved due to their brittle property. In this study, a novel molding method of FGM composed of fibrous materials was contrived through a papermaking technique, aiming at both practical convenience and high heat-resistant property. In this approach, the sedimentation rate of fibrous materials was regulated by controlling the concentration of a thickener and the pH of aqueous suspension. The pre-molded paper composites were sintered by using a hot-press machine. As a result, the FGMs were successfully prepared by controlling these factors, and the effective molding of FGMs became possible.
