This paper describes considerations on the dimensional ratio m of the solenoid in a solenoid-type electromagnetic launcher (EML) for triggered lightning. The initial velocity characteristics of four solenoids with different specifications, S20-6, S27-5, S32-4, and S47-3, were investigated experimentally. The S27-5, with m = 0.98, had the highest initial velocity (vi=36.2 m/s) among the four solenoids for Wi=1.03kJ, Im<2.0 kA, and mp=58.9 grams in a single-stage EML. In a double-stage EML, an initial velocity of vi=50.5 m/s was obtained by using two S27-5 solenoids.
