Description
Experimental results concerning remote browsing operation for image-coded documents are reported. Document page transmission methods from a file server to remote workstations via LAN are discussed, including a new handling method of a compressed image-coded document. Document transfer speed throughout the setworks is estimated and a faster page transfer method is examined. The experimental subsystem is constructed using existing components, except a document image compressor board and application programs. <BR>An image-coded document file server is configured on a workstation with a 130 mm rewritable optical disk operating under a Unix file system. Ethernet and TCP/IP are used as the communication system. The Modified Huffman codes and thinning-out picture data are examined to transfer documents image via LAN. As a result, browsing speeds, four seconds per page on the 4 dots/mm display and two seconds per page on the 2 dots /mm display, are obtained throughout Ethernet. These results will contribute to office automation promotion using LAN and optical disks.
