A number of digital VTRs for professional use have recently been developed. Low bit rate VTRs are certain to be adapted to consumer and industrial use in the future because of their law cost, small size and high quality picture. This paper presents a possible approach to these VTRs.<BR>An NTSC video signal is coded into 28.6 Mbps digital data using Sub-Nyquist Coding and a new type of DPCM. These data are then recorded on a video cassette tape by a consumer-type VTR. The packing density is 4. 2×107 bits per square inch. The error rate is 10-5 to 10-6. Random errors are corrected by an error-correcting code and dropouts are detected by an error propagation characteristic of DPCM and concealed by a frame memory. The quality of the reproduced picture is good.
