Shiikuwasa (Citrus depressa Hayata) is one of the citruses cultivated in the main island of Okinawa, Japan, with many varieties reported. Polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) are characteristic components of shiikuwasa. Their various biological activities have been extensively studied. In this study, the chemical properties and PMFs of the seeded shiikuwasa Kugani and seedless shiikuwasa during their development from September to December in 2003 were investigated. On the basis of the changes in sugar and acid contents during the development of each fruit, it was found that seedless shiikuwasa matured at an early stage compared with Kugani. Moreover, PMFs were found to be contained mostly in the peel tissue of each fruit. The PMF contents of seedless shiikuwasa were higher than those of Kugani from September to November. Therefore, it was suggested that juice with high PMF contents could be extracted from seedless shiikuwasa in the early season of this fruit.
